Michelle’s music has been submitted this year for 2 Grammys: Best Contemporary Blues Album and Best Americana Album and it’s easy to see why. All you have to do is listen.

My word, that woman can sing! We were treated to some new old-fashioned blues rock songs that shook the paint off the walls, but, when the dust started coming off the rafters, Michelle scaled it back with an acoustic set that was just stunning.

But I shouldn’t slight her guitar work which was as much a pleasure to watch as to hear. Words fail me, folks.

If you ever have the chance to hear Michelle Malone live, do not let that chance slide by you. Reach out and grab it with both hands and hold on for the ride. It’s worth waiting for! But while you’re waiting you might as well be listening to some really good music. So, show Michelle some love. At a secret location in the California hills, I got my first lesson in how to fire an assault rifle. The weapon is a CAR-15, the civilian version of the M-16.

In this shot you can see the brass flying. Compare it to the one on the left and you’ll see it’s in sequence, but we saw the brass moving through the air.

Police Captain Dave R. instructs me in the proper stance and grip of the CAR-15. Not to mention proper range etiquette and safety. Always point the weapon down range. Always handle the weapon as if it is loaded. If the weapon jams wait for assistance from the range master. Don’t Shoot The Turkey Vultures!

My target is proof that even an IT contractor can learn to shoot well. I won’t be applying for a position with the SWAT team any time soon. Nor will I be winning any marksmanship contests. But if I need to hit someone, I will be able to make the shot.

My camera flew over Corpus Christi and all I got were some awesome pictures. Whaaaaaa! Poor me! Seriously, I was working out at the CC airport configuring wireless network nodes. I was working in space operated by an aerial photography company. They were all film, and I wanted to see what my 8.3 mega pixel digital SLR could do. So I loaned it to them. They got some awesome pictures and even blew them up to 24″ x 36″ prints. Now they’re buying a Canon 20D too!

South Padre Island was a bust. No good birding sites, but the local ornithologist park ranger gave me some excellent pointers to great birding spots. On my way to the closest one, I saw thes two hawks hanging out on a telephone pole.

Life Bird Alert! I never saw a Scissor Tailed Fly Catcher before this one. That’s what birder’s call a life bird. Now I can add it to my life list, and I have the proof in pixels.

White Ibis in flight. i remember reading “The Scarlet Ibis” in school. I always wondered what it looked like, but no one could tell me or show me a picture. Well, this isn’t a picture of one, but it is two White Ibis in flight.

Another short one I’m afraid.

I caught only the briefest glimpses of this Common Yellow Throat. I managed to snap off three frames before the bird flitted away. I’m surprised this shot came out as good as it did. This shy bird wasn’t hanging around to get its picture taken.

This Great Egret came in for a landing acting more like a flycatcher than an egret. It turned and twisted as it came in, finally landing right in front of me. This was the best of the landing shots.

This Marsh Harrier (probably a female) spent a good 30 minutes hunting at the southern most end of San Francisco Bay. She was hunting marsh mice, which are about 1/10th the size of what we think of as mice. They are really tiny, no wonder she needed to eat more than one while I was watching her.

A pair of Red-tailed Hawks came and went all over Baylands park while I was there. They were awesome, coming and going as they pleased, and calling out in that wonderful call of theirs.
